Commander Wars

Commander Wars is an open source turn-based strategy game that tries to translate the experience of playing the legendary Advance Wars saga to computers with Windows. And it achieves its goal with flying colors. This game features gameplay that's practically identical to the gameplay that made the Intelligent Systems saga so popular.

You'll find tons of options when you create a new game. Creating a new scenario includes many variables, from randomizing the terrain's layout to choosing the number of opponents controlled by the AI that you'll fight against. So you can play either a 1v1 duel against the AI or a battle against four generals, each of which is represented by a different color.

If you've ever played a game in the Advance Wars saga, gameplay in Commander Wars will be familiar to you. Your objective at the beginning of each game is always the same: capture the closest buildings, which will provide you with resources. With these resources, you can recruit more and more troops, which you can use to capture more land while also attacking your enemies.

The battles between units also follow the same structure as Advance Wars. The success or failure of your attacks depends on several factors, including the position of your units (for example, if they're on higher ground, they'll be more effective) and their type (for example, mortars are especially effective against tanks).
